New Member Instructions

All new members to the ISNC facility must complete an orientation and safety-training process before access to the laboratory is granted. The new member orientation process is four steps and generally takes one week to complete.

Step 1: Apply For an Account

If necessary, apply for an account on the CNSI Core Lab Management System. The online application form can be found through the equipment reservation link on the CNSI homepage (http://clms.cnsi.ucla.edu/cnsi/clms/request-account).

The application requires a valid university account number or purchase order to complete. Before the account request is fulfilled, the CNSI finance office checks the information on the form and works with the applicant to correct any problems. If you already have an account on the CNSI CLMS, click on Your Account and request Authorization to the ISNC. Your account will indicate pending until after the first orientation meeting.

As part of the account application, complete the New User Application Form and the Project Form. Please make sure that the New User Application is filled out completely including P.I. or supervisor signature. The completed paperwork should be brought with you to the first orientation meeting detailed in Step 2.

Step 2: Attend First Orientation Meeting

New users should next attend the first of two mandatory orientation meetings. Meeting times and locations can be found on the homepage or the ISNC calendar. Initial orientation meetings are approximately 2 hours. The orientation begins in room 5220 on the 5th floor of the CNSI building.

The purpose of the first orientation meeting is to give an overview of the facility including policy, procedures, and safety information. During the first orientation meeting new members will be given a presentation and then enter the cleanroom, therefore it is important that you come properly dressed (ISNC User Guide Section 2.3). At the orientation a picture of new members will be taken for the facility badge.

It is important to arrive at the orientation session prepared.

  • Make account on CLMS system.
  • Appropriately dress for cleanroom access (the left panel has instructions).
  • Bring a completed New User Application.
  • Bring a completed Project Form.
  • Location: Room 5220 on the 5ht floor of the CNSI building

Step 3: Take Safety Test

The test is based on knowledge of the materials contained in the ISNC User Guide. Therefore, prior to taking the test, the members should completely read and understand the ISNC User Guide. The test is open book and must be completed prior to the second orientation meeting. Failure to pass the Safety Test will result in a delay, as the user will have to wait until the next orientation cycle to take the test again.

To take the safety test login to the clms system at: http://clms.cnsi.ucla.edu. In the upper right corner there will be a red link that will take you to the safety test.

Step 4: Attend Second Orientation Meeting

The date and time of the second orientation meeting will appear on the ISNC calendar. The orientation begins in room 5220 on the 5th floor of the CNSI building. and takes approximately 2 hours to complete.

The purpose of the second orientation meeting is to give detailed safety information about the facility, chemical handling, chemical waste, and chemical exposure. During the second orientation meeting new members will enter the cleanroom, therefore it is important that you come properly dressed (ISNC User Guide Section 2.3). To participate in the second orientation meeting, new members must:

  • Have completed and submitted the New User Application Form
  • Have completed the Project Form
  • Have attended the First Orientation Meeting
  • Have taken and passed the safety test
  • Be appropriately dressed for cleanroom access
  • Location: Room 5220 on the 5ht floor of the CNSI building

Badges will be handed out at the walkthrough and laboratory usage charges will commence. Following the walkthrough, users may enter the cleanroom at any time, but unless trained, cannot use equipment.

In the orientation process, the staff is looking for evidence that the user understands the language, rules, procedures, and consequences of working in the facility. The staff will evaluate whether the user can and will work safely in the laboratory. Actual approval for access is dependant upon the recommendation in these areas. The laboratory management may deny or restrict access, based upon this evaluation.

The most up-to-date information for new users can be found in Section 1.1 of the ISNC User Guide
